In 1992, the National Caravan Council (NCC) engaged HPI to develop and operate the Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRiS), the national register of touring caravans.
All caravans manufactured since 1992 by NCC members are recorded on the CRiS database by their unique 17 digit CRiS Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This VIN and the caravan description are recorded on a Tou ring Caravan Registration Document, which is sent to the caravan's registered keeper.
This has significantly helped to prevent and detect caravan crime and acts as a security check for insurers, finance companies, dealers and private caravan buyers. CRiS is also the first point of call for enforcement agencies investigating caravan thefts.
Today CRiS has over 330,000 touring caravans registered, and records of some 27,000 changes of ownership every year. Details are held of the 3000 or so caravans stolen each year, provided by the police, insurance companies, members of the public, The Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravanning Club.
