With an upsurge of caravans and motorhomes likely to use our roads this summer – anticipated to stretch end to end as much as 2618 miles – Safeguard Insurance have issued a safety and security warning to new ‘caravanners’ hitting the road for the first time. Rita Sadler, Safeguard’s manager comments: “Due to rising living costs many people are investing in caravans as they allow greater flexibility, without having to worry about airport check-in and hotel check-out times and the expense that foreign holidays create."Not only are they a good investment, but they are also far more convenient - people can literally take all their home comforts away with them and see their caravans as mobile pads."
However, to keep insurance claims to a minimum Safeguard believes that before the new generation hits the open road they need to ensure they have taken every precaution for their own safety and that of the vehicle.
"First time caravanners need to consider all aspects of the maintenance and use of such a purchase," continues Sadler. "First timers may also be unaware that caravans are often seen as easy targets by thieves and owners should therefore invest in as much security for the caravan as possible. In general insurers insist on a hitch lock and wheel clamp as a minimum."
To help new caravanners keep their premiums lower by not having a claim, Safeguard is providing five top tips for new caravanners, which will help the new generation to enjoy free time without any worries:
1. Research your chosen caravan - think about what kind of layout would suit you best, how important is the kitchen area to you, do you want a single or twin axle? Make time to visit one of the many dealers and shows and possibly rent before you buy from a recognised dealer.
2. Be comfortable with the size and weight of the caravan and make sure your towing car is a suitable match - speak to a reputable dealer for advice on matching your vehicle.
3. Ensure you are aware of hazards when towing and consider doing one of the many towing courses that are available.
4. With around 3,500 caravans reportedly stolen each year it's important to insure your caravan. Choose a specialist caravan insurance provider and read the policy thoroughly. Consider new-for-old cover, liability cover, European cover, cover for personal contents and equipment such as awnings, and emergency accommodation expenses. Ask your insurer what discounts they will offer for security devices and secure storage.
5. Always take your documents with you and know the numbers to ring if you need help and never 'wild' camp - always use recognised sites, especially abroad.
