Barometers are key to understanding the weather
Barometers are instruments for reading atmospheric pressure.
A bucketful of air weighs very little, but the entire atmosphere generates a great deal of weight.
Added to this is the fact that air is being pulled to earth with the force of gravity.
For this reason atmospheric pressure depends on the amount of air above the point at which it is being measured and is lower on top of a mountain than it is at sea level. If the barometer reads very high atmospheric pressure there will be no disturbance; if the barometer reads very low pressure the air will be rushing in from places where the pressure is higher. That means wind, and wind in turn may mean rain.
